Centrifugal Blowers for High-Resistance Process Lines and Filter Beds up to 500 mm WC

Some systems fight the air harder than others. Packed beds, carbon adsorbers, biofilters, catalyst beds, venturi sections, heat-recovery coils, and long, restrictive process lines all put hundreds of millimetres of water column between the blower inlet and the outlet. This is the top of the high-pressure class and the start of the very-high class, and it is where centrifugal blowers do work that fans cannot. This page explains how to size a blower for a high-resistance line, how hot or dirty gas changes the selection, and, importantly, where the 500 mm WC ceiling of our range sits against real duties.

What Counts as High Resistance

Blowers are grouped in four pressure classes. This page covers the upper part of our range.

Rangemm WCPa

Start of the very-high class, within our range381 to 5003,736 to 4,903

A duty at 400 or 450 mm WC is a serious blower job. Single-stage backward-curved wheels can deliver it, running at high speed, with efficiencies that can approach 80% in a well-matched selection.

Typical High-Resistance Duties

  • Adsorption and filter beds, such as activated-carbon beds, where the air must pass through a deep, dense medium.
  • Biofilters and packed towers, where the bed and the distribution system add resistance.
  • Catalyst and heat-recovery equipment, where coils and beds sit in the gas path.
  • Venturi and other high-energy scrubbers, where the pressure drop does the cleaning.
  • Long or restricted process lines, with many bends and small ducts.
  • Boiler and heater draft on units with high burner or heat-exchanger resistance.

Worked Example: A Filter Bed Duty

Illustrative example. A filter bed system moves 5 m³/s and needs 4,000 Pa (about 408 mm WC) at the operating conditions. Air power is 5 × 4,000 = 20 kW, and at 70% total efficiency the blower needs about 28.6 kW at the shaft.

At room temperature, the standard-air rating is 4,000 Pa, about 408 mm WC. That is well inside our range. But the blower is rated at standard air, and the gas is not always at room temperature.

Gas temperatureStandard-air rating needed for the same actual pressure
20 °C4,000 Pa (408 mm WC)
60 °C4,545 Pa (463 mm WC)
100 °C5,091 Pa (519 mm WC)

At 100 °C, the same duty needs a 519 mm WC standard-air rating, which is beyond our 500 mm WC standard maximum. So a high-resistance duty that fits comfortably at ambient temperature can move out of range when the gas is warm. Check the density-corrected pressure, not just the number on the datasheet. See gas temperature, altitude and density correction.

Beds Change Over Time

A packed bed or adsorption bed does not keep its resistance. It rises as the bed loads with dust, compacts, or wets, and it can change suddenly after a regeneration or media change. Design the blower for the worst case, and where the process needs steady flow, use speed control to hold it as the bed changes. Measure the pressure drop across the bed with a gauge, so you know when it is time to service. See blower curves, system curves and operating point drift.

Backward-Curved Wheels at High Pressure

At these pressures, backward-curved wheels are the standard choice. They run at high tip speed to develop the pressure, have a stable curve without a stall region, and have a non-overloading power characteristic that protects the motor. Forward-curved wheels do not reach these pressures. High speed means attention to balance, bearings, and noise. See backward-curved versus forward-curved blower wheels.

Motors, Speed, and Noise

High-pressure blowers run fast and can be loud. Noise rises steeply with speed, so inlet silencers, acoustic enclosures, or a larger wheel at lower speed help. Motor selection must cover the load, and a variable-speed drive lets the blower start softly and follow the load. See blower noise and silencers and motors, drives and starting large blowers.

Where 500 mm WC Ends

Our standard maximum is 500 mm WC, about 4.9 kPa. Real high-resistance duties extend beyond that: deep filter beds and some pressure blowers are specified from about 15 inches of water column up to 140 inches, roughly 381 to 3,556 mm WC. So an honest reading of our range is that we cover the lower part of that class and not the rest. For duties above 500 mm WC, the right machine is typically a multistage centrifugal blower or a positive-displacement blower, and we will say so instead of forcing a single-stage selection. See centrifugal versus positive-displacement blowers.

Where Our Range Fits

NextAir Systems manufactures centrifugal blowers up to 800 HP (about 597 kW) and up to 500 mm WC (about 4.9 kPa) static pressure, with backward-curved and forward-curved wheels and single-inlet and double-inlet designs, and high-temperature blowers for ovens up to 500 °C, kilns up to 650 °C, and furnaces up to 800 °C. High-resistance lines and filter beds needing up to 500 mm WC at standard-air rating are within range. Airflow and drive arrangement are confirmed for each selection.

What to Specify

  1. Airflow and the pressure drop across the bed or line, clean and worst case.
  2. Gas temperature, humidity, and composition.
  3. Whether the pressure figure is at operating conditions or standard air.
  4. Bed loading, regeneration, or media changes that alter resistance.
  5. Control approach to hold flow as resistance changes.
  6. Noise limit and motor and drive arrangement.
  7. Hazardous-area classification, if any.

Frequently Asked Questions

What pressure can your blowers deliver for filter beds?

Up to 500 mm WC (about 4.9 kPa) at standard air. Deeper beds and higher-pressure duties are outside our standard range.

Why can a duty move out of range when the gas is warm?

Warm gas is less dense, so the blower develops less pressure. A 408 mm WC duty at 20 °C needs a 519 mm WC standard-air rating at 100 °C.

Which wheel suits high-resistance lines?

Backward-curved wheels. They reach the pressure, have a stable curve, and protect the motor with a non-overloading power characteristic.

What if my duty needs more than 500 mm WC?

Multistage centrifugal or positive-displacement blowers usually serve those duties. We will say so early and explain which type suits.

How do I keep flow steady as a bed loads?

Size for the worst-case resistance and use speed control, with a pressure gauge across the bed to show when it needs servicing.
