Centrifugal Blowers for Cement Plants: Cooler, Air Slide, Filter and Conveying Duties
A cement plant runs dozens, sometimes hundreds, of fans and blowers, from the largest kiln draught fan down to the smallest bag-filter unit on a silo vent. Most of them are not the giant kiln ID fan. They are the air-slide blowers that move powder around the plant, the cooler and mill-area ventilation fans, the packing-plant dust collectors, and the pneumatic conveying blowers. This is where our range fits, and this page explains where it fits and where it does not.
Where Blowers Fit in a Cement Plant
| Duty | Typical pressure | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Air-slide conveying | Low to medium | Small, numerous, continuous duty, fluidising powder |
| Clinker cooler vent fans | High | Ventilating the cooler building |
| Nuisance dust collectors at transfer points | High | Clean-side, filtered, throughout the plant |
| Packing plant dedusting | High | Bag filling and palletising areas |
| Pneumatic conveying (short, dilute-phase) | High to the start of very high | Fly ash, cement, additives over modest distances |
| Motor and gearbox cooling | Low to medium | Mill drives, crusher motors |
| Electrical and control room pressurisation | Low to medium | Filtered, dust-free supply |
| Kiln, raw mill, cement mill, and main bag-filter draught | Very high, very large flow | Outside our range |
Air Slides: The Small Blower That Runs Everywhere
Cement plants move raw meal, clinker, and finished cement on air slides: inclined channels with a porous fabric floor, fluidised by a small, steady, low-pressure airflow so the powder flows downhill by gravity. Air-slide blowers are typically the smallest blowers in the plant, but there are many of them, running continuously. They need dry, clean air and a steady pressure without pulsation, which suits backward-curved wheels well. Confirm the air-slide manufacturer’s required pressure, since it depends on the fabric and the slide geometry. See low-pressure pneumatic conveying and air slides.
Clinker Cooler Ventilation
The clinker cooler area is hot and dusty, and its building needs ventilation separate from the cooler’s own process air fans, which are large, specialist machines outside our range. Building ventilation, electrical room supply, and equipment cooling around the cooler are ordinary blower duties, corrected for the local heat. See cooling air.
Dust Collection Throughout the Plant
A cement plant has dust collectors at almost every transfer point: crushers, conveyors, silo tops, weigh feeders, and the packing hall. Most of these are modest in size, clean-side, backward-curved blower duties.
Worked example. A nuisance dust collector at a transfer point moves 4 m³/s against 2,500 Pa (about 255 mm WC). Air power is 4 × 2,500 = 10 kW, and at 75% efficiency the blower needs about 13.3 kW at the shaft. That is a small, common duty, repeated many times across a plant. See dust collection system design and dust collection and filtration.
Where 800 HP Ends: Kiln, Raw Mill, and Cement Mill Draught
The kiln ID fan, raw mill fan, and cement mill fan are the largest fans in the plant, moving huge volumes of hot, dust-laden gas against significant resistance, often at several megawatts. These are specialist, heavy-duty machines, not within our 800 HP, 500 mm WC range, and often need construction for 200 to 350 °C gas with heavy dust loading. We are clear about this boundary: it protects you from being sold an undersized machine for a duty that needs a different class of fan.
Hot Air Slides and Recirculation Fans
Where an air slide or a recirculation duct carries hot material, such as clinker fines from the cooler, the fabric and casing carry the heat while the blower itself typically supplies ambient air. Where the blower does handle hot gas directly, such as kiln-area recirculation, see furnaces, kilns and ovens, noting our kiln limit of 650 °C.
Cement Dust: Abrasion and Alkalinity
Cement dust is fine, abrasive, and alkaline, and when damp it can attack coatings. Choose materials and coatings for the environment, and plan cleaning access, since deposits unbalance wheels before they cause visible wear. See maintaining industrial blowers.
Consistency Across Many Small Duties
A cement plant with dozens of similar dust collectors and air-slide blowers benefits from standardising on a small set of blower models rather than specifying each one from scratch. Standardisation cuts spare-parts inventory, since bearings, belts, and seals interchange across the plant, and it speeds up maintenance training, because technicians learn one family of machines instead of many. When specifying a new transfer point or air slide, check first whether an existing blower model on site already covers the duty, and use it again unless there is a good reason not to.
Where Our Range Fits
NextAir Systems manufactures centrifugal blowers up to 800 HP (about 597 kW) and up to 500 mm WC (about 4.9 kPa) static pressure, with backward-curved and forward-curved wheels. That covers air-slide blowers, cooler and mill-area ventilation, nuisance dust collection, packing-plant dedusting, short-distance pneumatic conveying, and equipment cooling throughout a cement plant. Kiln, raw mill, and cement mill draught fans, which are much larger and often handle hot gas above our range, are outside what we build.
What to Specify
- Duty type: air slide, ventilation, dust collection, or conveying.
- Airflow and resistance, at clean and worst-case conditions.
- Gas temperature, altitude, and dust type.
- Number of similar duties across the plant, for consistent specification.
- Control approach and noise limits.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do you supply kiln ID fans?
No. Kiln, raw mill, and cement mill draught fans are much larger, often hot, and outside our 800 HP, 500 mm WC range.
What blower suits an air slide?
A small, steady, low-pressure backward-curved blower supplying clean, dry air, sized to the air-slide manufacturer's specification.
How many dust collectors does a cement plant typically have?
Many, at almost every transfer point, and most are modest clean-side duties well within our range.
Can your blowers handle cement dust?
Yes, on the clean side of a filter, with attention to material, coating, and cleaning access for the abrasive, alkaline dust.
Can your blowers cool clinker cooler electrical rooms?
Yes, sized for the heat load and filtered for cement dust.
