Industrial Axial Fans in Ghana
Ghana’s industry is led by gold mining, both open-pit and underground, with cement grinding and bagging, manufacturing, food processing, and growing power and port infrastructure. The climate is hot and humid, the harmattan brings months of fine dust, and many sites are remote. Fans here need to cope with dust, moisture, and limited support, and the specification should reflect all three.
Tropical Heat and Air Density
Coastal Ghana sits at sea level with typical hot-season air near 33 °C. At that temperature, dry-air density is about 1.15 kg/m³, or 96% of standard, so the density penalty is small compared with the Gulf or the highlands, but it is not zero. A fan rated at 500 Pa at standard density develops about 479 Pa.
Example. A processing building gains 500 kW of sensible heat, and you allow an 8 K rise. At 1.153 kg/m³ the airflow needed is 500 ÷ (1.153 × 1.006 × 8) = 53.9 m³/s, or about 194,000 m³/h, roughly 4% more than a standard-air calculation. That suits two fans of about 97,000 m³/h each, within our range. Humidity also limits how much comfort extra air movement provides, so heat-stress measures matter. See how to size an axial fan.
Gold Mining
Gold mines need ventilation in plant buildings, crushers, workshops, and control rooms, and underground mines need auxiliary and booster ventilation in headings. Our pages on surface mines and quarries and underground mining set out what axial fans do. For underground work, leakage and restriction in long ducts, and fans operating far from their design points, waste more energy than the fan’s own losses. We cover auxiliary and booster duties, and we do not build primary main fans.
Cement Grinding and Manufacturing
Cement grinding plants and factories need heat-removal ventilation, filtered air for electrical rooms, and cooling for motors and gearboxes. Cement dust unbalances impellers and erodes blades, so plan cleaning access and vibration monitoring. See cement plants and factory and industrial ventilation. Mill and bag-filter draught fans are centrifugal and outside our range.
The Harmattan
From roughly December to March, the harmattan brings fine Saharan dust across the country. Dust loads filters quickly, coats blades, and can shorten the interval between cleanings. For fans, that means plan for filter changes more often in that season, keep impellers clean, and watch vibration and motor current for signs of deposits. Fans supplying filtered air to control rooms must be checked at fouled resistance and kept clear of stall. See axial fan vibration, balancing and maintenance.
Humidity and Corrosion
Warm, humid air and, on the coast, salt corrode steel and electrical equipment. Use durable coatings, protected fasteners, sealed motors with suitable ingress protection, and casings that drain. Mining and processing plants may also see acidic process atmospheres. See corrosion-resistant axial fans.
Remote Sites and Grid Reliability
Many mines are far from suppliers and rely on generators or a weak grid. Choose standard components, keep critical spares on site, and write a maintenance routine that site staff can follow. Soft starting and speed control reduce inrush current, which helps on generator supply, and they follow load to save fuel. Check that motors and drives suit the supply quality. See adjustable pitch versus VFD control.
Commissioning and Baselines
At commissioning, measure airflow against the fan curve, confirm rotation and speed, and record baseline vibration and motor current. Check the operating point at worst-case resistance, including loaded filters and the longest duct length, and stay clear of the stall region. A baseline recorded on the first day is the most valuable maintenance tool a remote site has, because every later change can be compared with it. See how to read an axial fan curve.
Heat Stress in Humid Conditions
In hot, humid air, extra airflow gives less relief than in dry heat, because sweat evaporates slowly. Ventilation still removes the heat that machinery and process add to a building, but heat stress control also needs shade, water, rest breaks, and sensible work scheduling. Spot cooling with fans at work stations helps, provided the air is cooler than the surroundings. For enclosed plant rooms and control rooms, cooled, filtered supply air keeps equipment and staff comfortable, and the fan must be checked against the filter’s fouled resistance during the dusty season.
Fuel and Energy Cost
Where sites run on diesel generation, every kilowatt a fan absorbs costs fuel. Following the load with speed control or staged fans cuts consumption sharply, because power varies with the cube of speed, and choosing an efficient fan at the right operating point avoids paying for wasted energy for years. Compare efficiency on the same basis and check part-load behaviour, not only peak efficiency. See fan efficiency and EU Regulation 2024/1834.
Where Our Range Fits
NextAir Systems manufactures axial fans with impeller diameters up to 1,600 mm, static pressure up to 2,400 Pa, and air volume up to 185,000 m³/h. That covers building ventilation, equipment cooling, small cooling systems, and auxiliary and booster mine ventilation in Ghana. Primary mine main fans, kiln and mill fans, and very large cooling fans are outside our range.
What to Specify

- Heat load and allowed rise, or air changes.
- For mines: fan role, duct size, length, and leakage.
- Power supply quality and starting method.
- Coating and corrosion environment.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the harmattan affect fans?
Yes. Fine dust loads filters, coats blades, and can unbalance impellers, so plan more frequent cleaning and filter changes in the season and monitor vibration.
Can you supply fans for gold mine ventilation?
We cover auxiliary and booster duties in mines. We do not build primary main fans.
Why do humid tropical sites need corrosion protection?
Warm, humid air and, on the coast, salt corrode standard finishes, so specify durable coatings, protected fasteners, and sealed motors.
Can fans run on generator power?
Yes, but check motor and drive suitability, and use soft starting or speed control to limit inrush current.
How many fans does a processing building need?
500 kW with an 8 K rise at 1.153 kg/m³ needs about 194,000 m³/h, typically two fans.
