Industrial Axial Fans in Kolkata
Kolkata anchors eastern India’s industrial belt. To its west lie the steel plants and coalfields of the Durgapur and Asansol region and, beyond, the mining and steel districts of Jharkhand and Odisha. Downstream, the port of Haldia supports petrochemicals and heavy industry, and the city itself has jute, engineering, food, and chemical works. The climate is hot, very humid, and monsoon-driven, on a delta where salt reaches inland. Fans here fight moisture and corrosion as much as heat.
Humid Heat and Air Density
Kolkata sits near sea level, with hot-season air around 38 °C and very high humidity. Dry-air density at 38 °C is about 1.13 kg/m³, or 94% of standard, so a fan rated at 500 Pa at standard density develops about 471 Pa at the same speed. Humidity reduces air density slightly further, and it matters more for the human and equipment effects of heat than for the fan calculation.
Example. A factory hall gains 500 kW of sensible heat, and you allow an 8 K rise. At 1.133 kg/m³, the airflow needed is 500 ÷ (1.133 × 1.006 × 8) = 54.8 m³/s, or about 197,400 m³/h, roughly 6% more than a standard-air calculation. That suits two fans of about 98,700 m³/h each, both within our range of 185,000 m³/h. See how to size an axial fan.
Steel and Metals
The steel plants of eastern India need heat-removal ventilation in melt shops and rolling mills, filtered cooled air for electrical rooms, and equipment cooling. Furnace fume extraction and dedusting fans are centrifugal and outside our range. See steel plants and foundries and metal casting, which explain why ventilation fans dilute and remove heat but do not capture fume and dust at the source.
Coal and Mining
The coalfields and mineral belts of eastern India need ventilation for plant buildings, coal handling, and workshops, and underground mines need auxiliary and booster ventilation. Many underground coal mines are gassy, so Group I requirements and national mine-safety rules apply, and fans and motors for such conditions follow different standards. We do not manufacture Group I equipment, so gassy workings need a specialist supplier. See underground mining and surface mines and quarries. We cover auxiliary and booster duties, and we do not build primary main fans.
Haldia: Petrochemicals and Port Industry
Haldia’s petrochemical and chemical facilities combine hazardous areas, corrosive atmospheres, and coastal humidity. Fans in classified zones must suit the zone, gas group, and temperature class, and zoning is the plant operator’s responsibility. See chemical and petrochemical plants and ATEX and spark-resistant axial fans. NextAir Systems does not currently manufacture ATEX-certified or AMCA 99 spark-resistant fans, so fans for classified zones come from a specialist supplier, while we supply standard fans for non-classified buildings.
Monsoon, Humidity, and Condensation
Weeks of wet, humid air put moisture into motors and condensation inside casings, and motors that stand idle in humid air can absorb water. Fit motor space heaters or run standby fans periodically where appropriate, use sealed motors with a suitable ingress protection rating, and make sure casings drain. Check insulation resistance on motors before restarting after a long idle period in the monsoon. See corrosion-resistant axial fans.
Delta Salinity and Coastal Corrosion
Along the delta and near Haldia, salt-laden air corrodes standard finishes. Use durable coating systems, stainless or otherwise protected fasteners, and sealed motors. Wash-down helps, since salt deposits keep corroding while they hold moisture, and inspection at every shutdown catches coating damage before the steel is exposed.
Cyclones and Waterlogging
The Bay of Bengal generates cyclones that reach the Kolkata region, and monsoon rain can waterlog low-lying industrial areas. Roof and wall fans must be anchored for wind loads, and electrical equipment should sit above likely flood levels. After a storm or flood, inspect fans, motors, and supports before restarting for debris, water in motors and bearings, and damaged blades.
Jute, Engineering, and Food Industry
Kolkata’s jute mills, engineering works, and food factories combine heat with fibre, lint, and dust. Fibre clogs filters and coats blades quickly, so plan filter changes, cleaning access, and vibration monitoring. Keep supply and extract balanced. See factory and industrial ventilation.
Energy and Control
Speed control and staged fans follow the load, and because power varies with the cube of speed, savings are large on ventilation and cooling that vary with weather and production. See adjustable pitch versus VFD control.
Commissioning and Baselines
At handover, measure airflow against each fan’s curve, confirm rotation and speed, and record baseline vibration and motor current. Check insulation resistance on motors that have stood idle in humid air, and smoke-test the building for stagnant areas and short circuits. A baseline recorded on the first day makes later changes easy to spot, whether from lint build-up, corrosion, or a bearing beginning to wear. See axial fan vibration, balancing and maintenance.
Where Our Range Fits
NextAir Systems manufactures axial fans with impeller diameters up to 1,600 mm, static pressure up to 2,400 Pa, and air volume up to 185,000 m³/h. That covers building ventilation, heat removal, equipment cooling, small cooling systems, and auxiliary and booster mine ventilation across the eastern industrial belt. Furnace and dedusting fans, primary mine main fans, and very large cooling fans are outside our range. ATEX-certified and AMCA 99 spark-resistant fans are not currently part of our range.
What to Specify

Frequently Asked Questions
How does Kolkata's humidity affect fans?
It corrodes finishes and puts moisture into idle motors and casings, so use durable coatings, sealed motors, drained casings, and check motor insulation before restarting.
Do you supply fans for gassy coal mines?
Gassy mines need Group I equipment, which follows different standards. We do not manufacture Group I equipment, so gassy mines need a specialist supplier for the fans and motors in the affected workings.
What should I check after a cyclone or flood?
Inspect fans, motors, and supports for debris, water in motors and bearings, damaged blades, and loosened fixings before restarting.
Can axial fans capture steel plant fume?
No. Fume is captured at the source by dedicated extraction with centrifugal fans. Axial fans ventilate and remove heat.
How many fans does a large hall need?
500 kW with an 8 K rise at 1.133 kg/m³ needs about 197,400 m³/h, typically two fans.
