Industrial Axial Fans in Mumbai

Mumbai and its surrounding industrial belt hold some of India’s densest concentrations of chemical, petrochemical, pharmaceutical, and engineering plants, alongside one of the country’s biggest ports. It is a place of tight industrial estates, coastal salt air, and a monsoon that floods streets. Fan selection here is dominated by corrosion, hazardous areas, and the need to fit ventilation into cramped, noise-sensitive sites.

Coastal Heat and Air Density

Mumbai sits at sea level, with hot-season air around 35 °C. Dry-air density is about 1.15 kg/m³, or 95% of standard, so a fan rated at 500 Pa at standard density develops about 476 Pa at the same speed. Humidity is high throughout much of the year.

Example. A production hall gains 500 kW of sensible heat, and you allow an 8 K rise. At 1.146 kg/m³, the airflow needed is 500 ÷ (1.146 × 1.006 × 8) = 54.2 m³/s, or about 195,200 m³/h, roughly 5% more than a standard-air calculation. That suits two fans of about 97,600 m³/h each, both within our range of 185,000 m³/h. See how to size an axial fan.

Chemicals and Petrochemicals

The chemical belt around Mumbai combines corrosive fumes, humid salt air, and hazardous areas. Fans in classified zones must suit the zone inside and outside the fan, the gas group, and the temperature class, and the motor must too. Zoning is the plant operator’s responsibility, and hazardous-area approvals follow national rules, so confirm which scheme applies. Read chemical and petrochemical plants and ATEX and spark-resistant axial fans. NextAir Systems does not currently manufacture ATEX-certified or AMCA 99 spark-resistant fans, so fans for classified zones come from a specialist supplier, while we supply standard fans for non-classified buildings.

Pharmaceuticals and Clean Manufacturing

Pharmaceutical and fine-chemical plants have clean areas, solvent handling, and strict validation. General ventilation and plant room fans support them, but clean-room air handling and containment systems are separate. Solvent areas may be classified hazardous, and cleanliness rules apply to surfaces and materials. Choose fans that are easy to clean and check whether the duty is really general ventilation or part of a validated system.

Corrosion From Salt and Monsoon

Salt-laden air and months of monsoon humidity corrode standard finishes quickly. Combined with acid or solvent fumes in chemical plants, the environment can be severe. Choose materials against the actual chemicals and the coastal exposure: coated or stainless steel, or fibre-reinforced plastic where fumes attack metal. Use protected fasteners, sealed motors with suitable ingress protection, and casings that drain, and consider a motor outside the airstream where fumes pass through the fan. See corrosion-resistant axial fans.

Monsoon Flooding

Mumbai’s monsoon can flood industrial estates. Locate motors and electrical equipment above likely water levels where possible, and protect drains. After flooding, inspect fans and motors before restarting: check for water in motors and bearings, debris, damaged blades, and loosened fixings, and measure motor insulation resistance.

Tight Estates and Noise

Many Mumbai industrial units are compact, close to their neighbours, and near housing. Axial fans are compact for their airflow, and can be arranged in banks in wall or roof openings. Noise limits often apply at the boundary, and fans must be positioned so that discharge does not blow into neighbouring properties. Larger fans at lower speed reduce noise and energy, and silencers add resistance that must be included in the system curve. See axial fan noise.

Port, Warehousing, and Logistics

The port and its logistics parks have large, hot, salt-exposed buildings. Roof and wall extraction with adequate make-up air, backdraught shutters, and durable coatings suits them. See factory and industrial ventilation.

Cooling

Cooling towers, closed-circuit coolers, and dry coolers serve chemical and manufacturing plants, and humid coastal conditions limit evaporative cooling, so state the design ambient for both temperature and humidity. See cooling towers and heat exchangers.

Energy and Control

Speed control and staged fans follow the load, and because power varies with the cube of speed, savings are large on variable duties. See adjustable pitch versus VFD control.

Commissioning and Documentation

Plants in Mumbai’s chemical and pharmaceutical sectors work under demanding documentation and audit regimes, and fans are part of the record. Ask for performance curves based on tests to a recognised standard, balance and vibration reports, material and coating certificates, and, for hazardous areas, the marking and documentation that show the fan suits its zone. At commissioning, measure airflow against the curve, record baseline vibration and motor current, and confirm that any ventilation-failure alarms work. In classified buildings, treat loss of ventilation as a process event that has to be detected and acted on. See fan performance testing.

Where Our Range Fits

NextAir Systems manufactures axial fans with impeller diameters up to 1,600 mm, static pressure up to 2,400 Pa, and air volume up to 185,000 m³/h. That covers building ventilation, heat removal, equipment cooling, and small and medium cooling systems in Mumbai’s industry. Process gas and scrubber fans, and very large cooling fans, are outside our range. ATEX-certified and AMCA 99 spark-resistant fans are not currently part of our range.

What to Specify

  1. Design ambient temperature, humidity, and salt exposure.
  2. Hazardous-area zone, gas group, temperature class, and approval scheme.
  3. Chemicals present and the fan material required.
  4. Heat load and allowed rise, or air changes.
  5. Noise limit at the boundary.
  6. Flood exposure and motor location.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do Mumbai chemical plants need special fans?

Often yes. Corrosive fumes and hazardous areas need suitable materials and construction, and the zone, gas group, and temperature class must be stated.

Can you supply fans for hazardous zones?

Not for classified zones. We do not currently manufacture ATEX-certified or AMCA 99 spark-resistant fans, so those come from a specialist supplier. We can supply standard fans for non-classified buildings, and we will tell you plainly which case applies if you tell us where the fan sits relative to your zone classification.

How does the monsoon affect fans?

Humidity and salt corrode finishes and put moisture into motors, so use durable coatings, sealed motors, and drained casings, and inspect after floods.

Can fans serve validated pharmaceutical systems?

General ventilation and plant fans can, but clean-room air handling is separate, so confirm whether the duty is part of a validated system.

How many fans does a production hall need?

500 kW with an 8 K rise at 1.146 kg/m³ needs about 195,200 m³/h, typically two fans.
