Industrial Axial Fans in Qatar

Qatar’s industry is anchored by natural gas and its downstream petrochemical, fertiliser, and steel plants, supported by large power and water facilities, ports, and a heavy programme of construction. Most of it sits at sea level on a hot, humid coast, with hazardous areas around anything that handles hydrocarbons. Fan selection here turns on three things: correcting for hot air, choosing construction that survives humid salt air, and getting hazardous-area requirements right from the start.

Hot, Humid Coastal Air

Summer air in Qatar reaches about 45 °C at sea level, with high humidity along the coast. At 45 °C, dry-air density is about 1.109 kg/m³, or 92% of standard, so a fan at a given speed develops about 92% of its rated pressure, and a 500 Pa standard duty comes out at about 461 Pa.

Example. A process building gains 500 kW of sensible heat, and you allow an 8 K rise. At 1.109 kg/m³ the airflow needed is 500 ÷ (1.109 × 1.006 × 8) = 56.0 m³/s, or about 201,700 m³/h, about 9% more than a standard-air calculation. That suits two fans of about 100,800 m³/h each, both inside our range of 185,000 m³/h. See how to size an axial fan.

Gas, Petrochemical, and Fertiliser Plants

Gas processing and petrochemical plants are built from many buildings, pump houses, compressor houses, and enclosures that need ventilation, and many contain classified areas. Air should enter low, sweep across the equipment, and leave high, with redundancy where losing ventilation would force a shutdown. Zoning is the plant operator’s responsibility, and the fan and motor must suit the zone, gas group, and temperature class. Our page on chemical and petrochemical plants and the guide to ATEX and spark-resistant axial fans set out the requirements. NextAir Systems does not currently manufacture ATEX-certified or AMCA 99 spark-resistant fans, so fans for classified zones come from a specialist supplier, while we supply standard fans for non-classified buildings.

Steel and Heavy Industry

Qatar’s steel and metals plants need heat-removal ventilation in melt shops and rolling bays, and filtered, cooled air for electrical rooms. Furnace fume extraction and dedusting fans are centrifugal and outside our range. See steel plants.

Cooling in Humid Heat

Air-cooled heat exchangers and coolers lose capacity in hot air, and wet cooling towers are affected by high humidity, since evaporation slows when the air is already moist. State the design ambient for both dry-bulb and humidity, and check the equipment at the worst case. Fans on wet equipment also face corrosive, humid air with treated water and drift. See cooling towers and heat exchangers.

Corrosion on the Gulf Coast

Salt-laden humid air corrodes standard finishes. Coastal plants benefit from durable coating systems, protected fasteners, sealed motors with suitable ingress protection, and casings that drain. Wash-down helps, because salt deposits keep corroding until removed. See corrosion-resistant axial fans.

Large Projects and Documentation

Qatar’s major industrial and infrastructure projects typically carry demanding documentation requirements. For fans, agree early on the performance basis: the pressure basis, air density, and tolerance, and whether ratings come from tests on the actual fan size. Ask for balance and vibration reports, material and coating certificates, and motor data. Where a fan is required to perform at a stated efficiency, ask which basis applies, since fan efficiency, fan plus motor efficiency, and static and total efficiency are different numbers. See fan efficiency and EU Regulation 2024/1834 and fan performance testing.

Heat Removal in Large Industrial Buildings

Warehouses, workshops, and fabrication halls in Qatar carry heavy heat loads from process, lighting, and solar gain on metal roofs. Roof and wall extraction with generous make-up air, sized on real density and split across several fans for redundancy, is standard. Balance supply and exhaust so the building does not run at strong negative pressure. See factory and industrial ventilation.

Energy and Control

Electricity is a major running cost, and cooling and ventilation loads vary with the weather. Speed control and staged fans save large amounts of energy because power varies with the cube of speed. See adjustable pitch versus VFD control.

Commissioning and Verification

Once installed, ventilation should be proved, not assumed. Measure airflow against the fan curve, check that each fan turns the right way, and record speed, motor current, and vibration as baselines. Measure the temperature rise across the building at a representative heat load, and smoke-test for stagnant areas and short circuits. In classified areas, verify that the fan marking and documents match the zone, and check that ventilation-failure alarms work. Repeat the checks after major plant changes, which alter heat loads and airflow paths. Verification often finds a blocked opening, a closed damper, or a fan running backward, and each is far cheaper to fix at handover than after complaints begin.

Where Our Range Fits

NextAir Systems manufactures axial fans with impeller diameters up to 1,600 mm, static pressure up to 2,400 Pa, and air volume up to 185,000 m³/h. That covers building ventilation, heat removal, equipment cooling, and small and medium cooling systems in Qatari industry. Process gas fans, furnace and dedusting fans, and very large cooling-tower fans are outside our range. ATEX-certified and AMCA 99 spark-resistant fans are not currently part of our range.

What to Specify

  1. Design ambient: dry-bulb temperature and humidity.
  2. Hazardous-area zone, gas group, and temperature class, if any.
  3. Heat load and allowed rise, or air changes.
  4. Coating system and motor protection for coastal duty.
  5. Documentation and performance basis.
  6. Fans, redundancy, and control approach.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does Qatar's heat change fan selection?

At 45 °C and sea level, air density is about 92% of standard, so fans develop less pressure at the same speed and heat-removal airflow must be recalculated.

Can you supply fans for gas plant hazardous areas?

Not for classified zones. We do not currently manufacture ATEX-certified or AMCA 99 spark-resistant fans, so those come from a specialist supplier. We can supply standard fans for non-classified buildings, and we will tell you plainly which case applies if you tell us where the fan sits relative to your zone classification.

Why does humidity matter for cooling equipment?

Wet cooling towers rely on evaporation, which slows in humid air, so state both temperature and humidity for the design ambient.

Do coastal Qatari plants need special coatings?

Usually, since salt and humidity corrode standard finishes, so specify a durable coating system, protected fasteners, and sealed motors.

How many fans does a large building need?

It depends on the heat load. 500 kW with an 8 K rise at 1.109 kg/m³ needs about 201,700 m³/h, typically two fans.
