Industrial Axial Fans in Saudi Arabia
Saudi Arabia’s industrial base spans cement, petrochemicals, steel, mining, power, and a rapidly growing logistics and manufacturing sector. Much of it sits in inland desert heat or in coastal industrial cities on the Gulf and Red Sea, and each setting stresses a fan differently. An axial fan specified from a sea-level catalogue for a 48 °C inland plant will underperform, and one specified without thought for dust or coastal corrosion will not last. This page covers how site conditions in the Kingdom change fan selection, and where our range fits.
Heat, Altitude, and Air Density
Riyadh and much of the interior sit at roughly 600 m altitude, and summer air temperatures reach 48 °C. At 600 m and 48 °C, air density is about 1.02 kg/m³, or roughly 85% of the standard 1.204 kg/m³ that fan catalogues assume. Two things follow. A fan running at a given speed develops only about 85% of its rated pressure, so a duty that needs 500 Pa at standard density will develop about 425 Pa. And ventilation airflow for heat removal must be calculated with the real density.
Example. An industrial hall gains 500 kW of sensible heat, and you allow an 8 K rise. At standard density the airflow would be 51.6 m³/s. At 1.023 kg/m³, the airflow needed is 500 ÷ (1.023 × 1.006 × 8) = 60.7 m³/s, or about 218,600 m³/h, roughly 18% more. That is a duty of two fans of about 109,300 m³/h each, both inside our range of 185,000 m³/h each. See how to size an axial fan.
Cement and Heavy Industry
Saudi cement plants and heavy industrial sites need building ventilation, electrical room supply, and equipment cooling around their kilns, mills, and coolers. The guidance on dust, deposits, and density in our page on cement plants applies directly. Kiln, mill, and bag-filter draught fans are centrifugal and outside our range. Steel plants and foundries in the Kingdom face the same issues of heat and dust, covered in our pages on steel plants and foundries.
Petrochemical Cities and Hazardous Areas
The Kingdom’s large petrochemical complexes on the Gulf and Red Sea coasts combine heat, humidity, salt, and hazardous areas. Fans in classified zones must be selected for the zone, gas group, and temperature class, and zoning is the plant’s responsibility. Read ATEX and spark-resistant axial fans and our page on chemical and petrochemical plants before specifying. Coastal humidity and salt also demand corrosion-resistant construction. See corrosion-resistant axial fans.
Mining and Mineral Processing
Saudi Arabia’s mining and mineral processing sector uses fans for plant ventilation, control rooms, and equipment cooling, and underground operations need auxiliary and booster ventilation. Our pages on surface mines and quarries and underground mining set out what axial fans can and cannot do. We do not build primary main mine fans.
Dust Storms
Desert dust storms load air intakes and coat equipment. For fans this means faster deposit build-up on blades, more filter loading on room supply fans, and abrasion of blade edges. Practical measures include intake filtration or placement, easy cleaning access, and vibration monitoring so unbalance from dust is caught early. See axial fan vibration, balancing and maintenance.
Cooling in a Hot, Dry Climate
Cooling towers, air-cooled heat exchangers, and dry coolers rely on axial fans, and hot ambient air cuts their capacity. A cooler sized for a mild day will not reject its heat at 48 °C, so state the design ambient carefully. Our page on cooling towers and heat exchangers explains the sizing and layout points, including hot air recirculation.
Logistics and Factories
The Kingdom’s warehouses, logistics parks, and factories are large buildings with heavy heat loads. Roof and wall extraction with sufficient make-up air, sized for real density and split across several fans for redundancy, is the standard answer. See factory and industrial ventilation.
Serviceability and Local Support
Large industrial sites are often far from cities. Favour standard components, keep critical spares on site, and choose designs that are easy to inspect. A robust maintenance routine with monthly vibration readings prevents most failures.
Documentation for Large Projects
Saudi industrial projects are often delivered under large engineering, procurement, and construction contracts with detailed quality and documentation requirements. For fans, plan early for the documents the project will ask for: performance curves for the actual duty, based on tests to a recognised standard, balance and vibration reports, material and coating certificates, and motor data. Agree the acceptance basis, meaning the pressure basis, air density, and tolerance, before ordering, because a dispute over a small shortfall is hard to settle afterwards. Ask whether the rating comes from a test on the actual fan size, since sizes are sometimes scaled from a smaller test. See fan performance testing.
Where Our Range Fits
NextAir Systems manufactures axial fans with impeller diameters up to 1,600 mm, static pressure up to 2,400 Pa, and air volume up to 185,000 m³/h. That covers building ventilation, equipment cooling, and small and medium cooling systems in Saudi industry. Primary mine fans, kiln and mill draught fans, and very large cooling-tower fans are outside our range, and we will say so early. ATEX-certified and AMCA 99 spark-resistant fans are not currently part of our range.
What to Specify
- Site altitude and the design ambient temperature, so selection uses the correct density.
- Heat load and allowed temperature rise, or air changes.
- Dust conditions, and whether intake filtration is provided.
- Hazardous-area classification, if any.
- Coastal or corrosive conditions.
- Number of fans, redundancy, and control approach.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much does Saudi heat reduce fan performance?
At 600 m altitude and 48 °C, air density is about 85% of standard, so a fan develops about 85% of its rated pressure at the same speed, and ventilation airflow must be recalculated with that density.
Can you supply fans for petrochemical hazardous areas?
Not for classified zones. We do not currently manufacture ATEX-certified or AMCA 99 spark-resistant fans, so those come from a specialist supplier. We can supply standard fans for non-classified buildings, and we will tell you plainly which case applies if you tell us where the fan sits relative to your zone classification.
How do dust storms affect axial fans?
They deposit dust on blades, load filters, and abrade blade edges, so plan intake filtration, cleaning access, and vibration monitoring.
Do you build main mine fans or kiln fans?
No. Those are outside our range of 1,600 mm, 2,400 Pa, and 185,000 m³/h, and we will say so early.
How many fans does a large hall need?
It depends on the heat load and density. A 500 kW load with an 8 K rise at 1.023 kg/m³ needs about 218,600 m³/h, typically two fans.
