Industrial Centrifugal Blowers in Kolkata
Kolkata anchors eastern India’s industrial belt, and its blower demand spans nearly every application this product line covers. To its west lie the steel plants and coalfields of the Durgapur and Asansol region and, beyond, the mining and steel districts of Jharkhand and Odisha. Downstream, the port of Haldia supports petrochemicals and heavy industry, and the city itself has jute, engineering, food, and chemical works. The climate is hot, very humid, and monsoon-driven, on a delta where salt reaches inland. This page covers how those conditions shape blower selection across Kolkata’s industrial base.
Humid Heat and Air Density
Kolkata sits near sea level, with hot-season air around 38 °C and very high humidity. Dry-air density at 38 °C is about 1.13 kg/m³, roughly 94% of standard.
Example. A process duty needs 350 mm WC actual pressure. At 94% of standard density, the equivalent standard-air rating is 350 × 1.204 ÷ 1.133 ≈ 372 mm WC. Humidity reduces air density slightly further, and it matters more for the human and equipment effects of heat than for the blower calculation itself. See gas temperature, altitude and density correction.
Steel and Metals
The steel plants of eastern India, including the Durgapur and Asansol cluster, need furnace combustion air, heat-removal ventilation in melt shops and rolling mills, and equipment cooling. Furnace fume extraction and large-scale dedusting fans are outside our range. See steel plants.
Coal and Mining
The coalfields and mineral belts of eastern India need combustion air and cooling for processing plant, dust collection at coal handling points, and, for underground mines, auxiliary extraction in non-gassy workings within our pressure range. Many underground coal mines are gassy, so Group I requirements apply, and we do not manufacture that equipment. See mining and mineral processing.
Haldia: Petrochemicals and Port Industry
Haldia’s petrochemical and chemical facilities combine hazardous areas, corrosive atmospheres, and coastal humidity. Blowers in classified zones need a specialist ATEX supplier, since we do not currently manufacture that equipment, while non-classified process cooling and ventilation remain within our range. See chemical and fertiliser plants.
Monsoon, Humidity, and Condensation
Weeks of wet, humid air put moisture into motors and condensation inside casings, and motors that stand idle in humid air can absorb water. Use sealed motors with a suitable ingress protection rating, ensure casings drain properly, and check motor insulation resistance before restarting after a long idle period in the monsoon season.
Delta Salinity and Coastal Corrosion
Along the delta and near Haldia, salt-laden air corrodes standard finishes. Use durable coating systems, protected fasteners, and sealed motors, and inspect at every shutdown to catch coating damage before the underlying steel is exposed.
Jute, Engineering, and Food Industry
Kolkata’s jute mills, engineering works, and food factories combine heat with fibre, lint, and dust. Fibre clogs filters and coats blades quickly, so plan filter changes, cleaning access, and vibration monitoring so that unbalance from fibre build-up is caught early rather than after a bearing has already been damaged. See industrial drying and process air.
Cyclones and Waterlogging
The Bay of Bengal generates cyclones that reach the Kolkata region, and monsoon rain can waterlog low-lying industrial areas. Roof and wall blowers must be anchored for wind loads, and electrical equipment should sit above likely flood levels. After a storm or flood, inspect blowers, motors, and supports before restarting for debris, water in motors and bearings, and damaged parts.
Power Generation in the Eastern Belt
Power plants serving the eastern industrial belt need combustion air for auxiliary boilers, process cooling, and building ventilation, corrected for the region’s heat and humidity, with utility-scale boiler draught fans outside our range. See power plants.
Commissioning and Baselines
At handover, measure airflow against each blower’s curve, confirm rotation and speed, and record baseline vibration and motor current. Check insulation resistance on motors that have stood idle in humid air, since this is one of the most common early-life issues in the region’s climate. See maintaining industrial blowers.
Where Our Range Fits
NextAir Systems manufactures centrifugal blowers up to 800 HP (about 597 kW) and up to 500 mm WC (about 4.9 kPa) static pressure, with backward-curved and forward-curved wheels, single-inlet and double-inlet designs. That covers combustion air, cooling, drying, and dust collection across eastern India’s steel, coal, petrochemical, and manufacturing belt, in non-classified areas.
What to Specify
- Design ambient temperature, humidity, and salt exposure.
- Duty: combustion air, cooling, drying, or dust collection.
- Fibre, lint, or dust conditions.
- Hazardous-area classification, if any, and whether a mine is gassy.
- Motor protection for humid, idle conditions.
Engineering and Fabrication
Kolkata’s substantial engineering and fabrication sector, supplying the wider eastern industrial belt, needs welding-fume extraction, general ventilation, and equipment cooling, all standard blower duties corrected for the local humidity. See fume extraction and scrubber systems.
Standardising Across the Region
Groups operating several plants across the eastern belt, from Durgapur to Haldia, benefit from standardising blower models across sites, which simplifies spares holding across a region with its own distinct supply chain and lets maintenance staff move between plants without relearning equipment.

Frequently Asked Questions
How does Kolkata's humidity affect blowers?
It corrodes finishes and puts moisture into idle motors and casings, so use durable coatings, sealed motors, drained casings, and check motor insulation before restarting.
Do you supply blowers for gassy coal mines?
Gassy mines need Group I equipment, which we do not manufacture. Tell us first so we can say whether we can supply what you need.
Can your blowers handle steel plant furnace combustion air?
Yes, sized from the fuel input and corrected for the site's real air density.
Can you supply blowers for Haldia's petrochemical hazardous areas?
Not currently. Classified zones need a specialist supplier.
How should idle blowers be protected in the monsoon?
Sealed motors, drained casings, and a check of motor insulation resistance before restarting after a long idle period.
