Industrial Centrifugal Blowers in Ghana
Ghana’s industry is led by gold mining, both open-pit and underground, with cement grinding and bagging, manufacturing, food processing, and growing power and port infrastructure, spanning most of the applications a general-purpose blower is built to serve. The climate is hot and humid, the harmattan brings months of fine dust, and many sites are remote. This page covers how dust, moisture, and distance from support shape blower selection, alongside the combustion, cooling, drying, and conveying duties found across Ghanaian industry.
Tropical Heat and Air Density
Coastal Ghana and most of the country’s populated south sit at sea level with typical hot-season air near 33 °C. At that temperature, dry-air density is about 1.15 kg/m³, roughly 96% of standard, a smaller density penalty than in the Gulf or the highlands, but not zero.
Example. A process duty needs 350 mm WC actual pressure. At 96% of standard density, the equivalent standard-air rating is about 365 mm WC. Humidity also limits how much comfort extra airflow provides, so ventilation and heat-stress measures both matter. See gas temperature, altitude and density correction.
Gold Mining
Gold mines need combustion air and cooling for processing equipment, dust collection at crushers and screening plants, and, where mining is underground, auxiliary extraction in non-gassy workings within our pressure range. See mining and mineral processing.
Cement Grinding and Manufacturing
Cement grinding plants and factories need combustion air where applicable, filtered air for electrical rooms, and cooling for motors and gearboxes. Cement dust unbalances impellers and erodes blades, so plan cleaning access and vibration monitoring. See cement plants and dust collection and filtration.
The Harmattan
From roughly December to March, the harmattan brings fine Saharan dust across the country. Dust loads filters quickly, coats blades, and can shorten the interval between cleanings. Plan for more frequent filter changes and impeller cleaning in that season, and watch vibration and motor current for signs of deposits. Fans supplying filtered air to control rooms must be checked at fouled resistance. See maintaining industrial blowers.
Humidity and Corrosion
Warm, humid air and, on the coast, salt corrode steel and electrical equipment. Use durable coatings, protected fasteners, sealed motors with suitable ingress protection, and casings that drain. Mining and processing plants may also see acidic process atmospheres in scrubber duties.
Remote Sites and Grid Reliability
Many mines are far from suppliers and rely on generators or a weak grid. Choose standard components, keep critical spares on site, and write a maintenance routine that site staff can follow. Soft starting and speed control reduce inrush current, which helps on generator supply, and follow load to save fuel. See flow control for blowers.
Pneumatic Conveying and Drying
Cocoa, grain, and other agricultural products need drying and, in some processing chains, low-pressure pneumatic conveying, both standard blower duties within our range for short distances and moderate temperatures. See industrial drying and process air and low-pressure pneumatic conveying.
Power Generation and Ports
Ghana’s power plants and expanding port infrastructure need combustion air for auxiliary generation, process cooling, and heat-removal ventilation for large warehouses and workshops. See power plants and ventilation and exhaust.
Bauxite and Manganese Processing
Beyond gold, Ghana’s bauxite and manganese mining and processing operations need mineral drying, dust collection at transfer points, and cooling for processing equipment, following the same patterns described for mining generally, with attention to the abrasive nature of the ore dust. See mining and mineral processing.
Heat Stress in Humid Conditions
In hot, humid air, extra airflow gives less relief than in dry heat, because sweat evaporates slowly. Ventilation still removes the heat that machinery and process add to a building, but heat stress control also needs shade, water, and sensible work scheduling alongside the mechanical ventilation. Spot cooling with blowers at work stations helps, provided the air supplied is cooler than the surroundings.
Where Our Range Fits
NextAir Systems manufactures centrifugal blowers up to 800 HP (about 597 kW) and up to 500 mm WC (about 4.9 kPa) static pressure, with backward-curved and forward-curved wheels, single-inlet and double-inlet designs. That covers combustion air, cooling, drying, conveying, and dust collection across Ghanaian industry, including auxiliary and mineral processing duties in non-gassy mines.
What to Specify
- Design ambient temperature, humidity, and harmattan dust exposure.
- Duty: combustion air, cooling, drying, conveying, or dust collection.
- For mines: fan role, duct size, and length, if underground.
- Power supply quality and starting method.
- Coating and corrosion environment.
Documentation for Mining Projects
Ghana’s mining projects, often developed by international operators, typically follow formal engineering documentation standards. Agree early on the performance basis, including pressure basis, air density, and tolerance, and ask for material certificates suited to the humid, sometimes acidic processing environment. See blower performance testing.
Verifying Performance at a Remote Site
At commissioning, measure airflow and pressure against the blower curve, confirm rotation, and record baseline vibration and motor current. On a remote mine or processing site, that baseline is often the only diagnostic reference available when a fault appears months later, so record it for every blower on site, not just a representative sample.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does the harmattan affect blowers?
Yes. Fine dust loads filters, coats blades, and can unbalance impellers, so plan more frequent cleaning and filter changes in the season.
Can you supply blowers for gold mine ventilation?
We cover auxiliary extraction in non-gassy workings within our pressure range. We do not build primary main fans for large mines.
Why do humid tropical sites need corrosion protection?
Warm, humid air and, on the coast, salt corrode standard finishes, so specify durable coatings, protected fasteners, and sealed motors.
Can blowers run on generator power?
Yes, but check motor and drive suitability, and use soft starting or speed control to limit inrush current.
Can your blowers dry cocoa or grain?
Yes, sized as an industrial drying duty from the moisture to remove and the operating temperature.
