Industrial Centrifugal Blowers in Ethiopia

Ethiopia is one of Africa’s fastest-industrialising economies, and its blower demand spans nearly the full range of applications this product line covers. Cement capacity has expanded rapidly, industrial parks host garment, textile, and food factories, and mining and power projects continue to grow. Nearly all of it sits on a high plateau, where the air is a quarter thinner than at sea level, and equipment arrives by long road journeys from the port at Djibouti. Altitude and logistics make Ethiopia a place where blower selection has to be done carefully, and done early, alongside the combustion, drying, and dust-collection duties found across Ethiopian industry.

The Altitude Problem

Addis Ababa sits at about 2,355 m. At that altitude and a mild 25 °C, dry-air density is about 0.89 kg/m³, roughly 74% of the standard 1.204 kg/m³ that blower catalogues assume.

Example. A process duty needs 350 mm WC actual pressure. At 74% of standard density, the equivalent standard-air rating is 350 × 1.204 ÷ 0.889 ≈ 474 mm WC, close to our 500 mm WC standard maximum. A duty comfortable at sea level can approach the top of our range at Addis altitude. Two further points about thin air: blower power falls in proportion to density, so the motor draws less than at sea level for the same speed, but the blower also produces less pressure, so do not simply downsize the motor without checking the duty; and motor cooling is less effective in thin air, so check the derating that applies. See gas temperature, altitude and density correction.

Cement Expansion

Ethiopia’s cement plants need kiln-area combustion air, air-slide conveying, and dust collection at transfer points, with kiln draught fans themselves outside our range. See cement plants.

Industrial Parks: Garments, Textiles, and Food

The country’s industrial parks house large single-storey factories with lint, dust, and heat from machinery and lighting. Ventilation must remove heat while coping with fibre that clogs filters and coats blades quickly. See industrial drying and process air and food, agro and textile plants.

Mining and the Danakil Contrast

Ethiopia’s mineral projects include gold, tantalum, and potash, and the highlands and the Danakil Depression are opposites. The depression lies below sea level, with air temperatures far above 40 °C and a dry-air density of roughly 1.13 kg/m³, about 94% of standard, so blowers there face extreme heat but not thin air. Highland mines face thin air and cooler temperatures. See mining and mineral processing and high-temperature centrifugal blowers.

Logistics From Djibouti

Equipment reaches Ethiopia by sea to Djibouti and then by a long road haul, so transport is slow and costly, and damage and delay are real risks that should be planned for from the start of a project. Splitting a large ventilation duty across several blowers makes each unit easier to transport, lift, and install, and one failed unit does not stop the plant. Keep critical spares on site, because replenishing them takes weeks, and agree documentation and test data before shipment.

Power Supply and Control

Ethiopia’s grid is largely hydroelectric, but supply interruptions and voltage variations still occur from time to time. Soft starting and speed control reduce inrush current and follow load. Check that motors and drives are rated for altitude and the local supply. See flow control for blowers.

Commissioning at Altitude

When commissioning, measure airflow and pressure at site conditions and compare with density-corrected curves, since a blower checked against a standard-air curve will appear to underperform by about 26%. Record baseline vibration and motor current for every blower. See blower curves, system curves and operating point drift.

Noise Near Growing Cities

Industrial parks are being built near expanding cities, and boundary noise limits are becoming common. Larger blowers at lower speed are quieter and use less energy, and attenuators add resistance that must be included in the system curve. See blower noise and silencers.

Standard Versus High-Temperature Construction

Many Ethiopian industrial duties involve gas above ambient temperature, especially in cement and mineral processing, and it’s worth checking early whether a duty genuinely needs our high-temperature construction or is ordinary combustion air drawing from ambient conditions. Only fans that move hot gas or hot recirculation air directly need the high-temperature range. See furnaces, kilns and ovens.

Where Our Range Fits

NextAir Systems manufactures centrifugal blowers up to 800 HP (about 597 kW) and up to 500 mm WC (about 4.9 kPa) static pressure, with backward-curved and forward-curved wheels, single-inlet and double-inlet designs, and high-temperature blowers for furnaces up to 800 °C, kilns up to 650 °C, and ovens up to 500 °C. At altitude, the larger standard-air rating needed for a given duty means selections should always be checked against the top of our range.

What to Specify

  1. Site altitude and seasonal temperature range.
  2. Duty: combustion air, drying, cooling, conveying, or dust collection.
  3. Lint, dust, and filter conditions.
  4. Motor and drive derating for altitude.
  5. Logistics, spares, and documentation before shipment.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much does Addis Ababa's altitude reduce blower performance?

At about 2,355 m and 25 °C, air density is roughly 74% of standard, so a blower develops about 74% of its rated pressure at the same speed.

How do I select a blower for 350 mm WC at Addis?

Select one rated at about 474 mm WC on the standard-air curve at the same flow, since pressure scales with density.

Why split a duty across several blowers in Ethiopia?

It adds redundancy and makes units easier to transport and install over long road hauls, and one failure does not stop the plant.

Do I need to derate motors at altitude?

Check the derating that applies, since cooling is less effective in thin air, but do not downsize the motor without checking the duty.

Can your blowers handle Danakil Depression heat?

Yes, within our high-temperature range, with materials and bearing cooling engineered for the duty.
