Industrial Centrifugal Blowers in Tanzania

Tanzania’s industrial base combines gold and other mining in the north and west, cement plants along the coast, a busy port at Dar es Salaam, and a growing manufacturing and power sector, spanning most of the applications a general-purpose centrifugal blower is built to serve. The country spans the hot, humid coast and highlands above 1,000 m, and many sites are far from the ports where equipment arrives. That range of conditions, and the distance from support, decide how blowers should be selected and supplied, alongside the combustion, cooling, drying, and dust-collection duties found across Tanzanian industry.

Coast and Highlands: Two Density Cases

On the coast, at sea level and 33 °C, dry-air density is about 1.15 kg/m³, roughly 96% of standard. Inland, sites near Lake Victoria and in the highlands sit around 1,100 m, where a 28 °C day gives a density of about 1.02 kg/m³, roughly 85% of standard.

Example. A process duty needs 350 mm WC actual pressure. On the coast, the equivalent standard-air rating is about 365 mm WC. Inland, the same duty needs about 410 mm WC, a meaningful difference within one country. Always calculate from the specific site’s altitude and temperature rather than assuming a single national figure applies everywhere. See gas temperature, altitude and density correction.

Gold Mining

Mines need combustion air and cooling for processing equipment, dust collection at crushers and screening plants, and, where mining is underground, auxiliary extraction within our pressure range for non-gassy workings. Primary main mine ventilation fans are much larger and outside our range. See mining and mineral processing and underground mining.

Cement and Manufacturing

Cement plants, food processors, and factories need combustion air where applicable, filtered air for electrical rooms, and cooling for motors and gearboxes. Dust deposits unbalance impellers, so plan cleaning access and vibration monitoring. See cement plants and ventilation and exhaust.

Ports and Logistics

Dar es Salaam is the gateway for much of the region, and its port and logistics buildings are large, hot, and salt-exposed. Roof and wall extraction with generous make-up air suits these halls, and coastal corrosion needs durable coatings and protected fasteners, particularly for cooling and scrubber equipment handling wet or salt-laden air.

Food and Agro-Processing

Tanzania has substantial food, beverage, and coffee or tea processing industry, with buildings that combine heat, humidity, and cleanliness requirements. Drying and cooling blowers here need materials that tolerate wash-down, and motors kept out of wet zones where practical. See industrial drying and process air and food, agro and textile plants.

Remote Sites and Long Supply Lines

For many Tanzanian sites, spares arrive by long road journeys, so a broken part can mean weeks of downtime. Choose standard components, keep critical spares on site, and design the maintenance routine so site staff can carry it out without specialist tools. Take vibration readings monthly and record motor current, since a change at the same airflow warns of deposits or damage well before failure. See maintaining industrial blowers.

Power Supply

Where the grid is weak or sites run on generators, soft starting and speed control reduce inrush current and follow load to save fuel. Check that motors and drives suit the supply. See flow control for blowers.

Power Generation

Tanzania’s power plants, including gas-fired generation, need combustion air for boilers and turbines, process cooling, and building ventilation, corrected for the site’s altitude and ambient temperature. See power plants.

Sizing With Logistics in Mind

When equipment must be shipped and hauled a long way, splitting a large duty across several smaller blowers has practical benefits beyond redundancy: units are easier to transport, lift, and install on a site with limited crane capacity, and one failed unit does not stop the plant. Our blowers reach 800 HP each, so a large duty can be divided across several units where site logistics favour smaller individual machines.

Commissioning and Baselines

At commissioning, measure airflow against the blower curve, confirm rotation and speed, and record baseline vibration and motor current. Check the operating point at worst-case resistance, and stay clear of instability. On a site where a technician may be days away, a baseline recorded on the first day is the most valuable maintenance tool available.

Where Our Range Fits

NextAir Systems manufactures centrifugal blowers up to 800 HP (about 597 kW) and up to 500 mm WC (about 4.9 kPa) static pressure, with backward-curved and forward-curved wheels, single-inlet and double-inlet designs. That covers combustion air, cooling, drying, and dust collection across Tanzania’s coastal and inland industry, including auxiliary mine ventilation in non-gassy workings.

What to Specify

  1. Site altitude and design ambient temperature.
  2. Duty: combustion air, cooling, drying, or dust collection.
  3. For mines: fan role, duct size, and length, if underground.
  4. Coastal or corrosive conditions.
  5. Power supply and starting method.

Verifying Performance at Coastal and Inland Sites

Whether commissioning a blower on the coast or in the highlands, measure airflow and pressure against the density-corrected curve rather than the standard-air nameplate figure. A blower that appears to underperform against the nameplate may simply be running correctly at the true site density, so always compare against the corrected curve first before suspecting a fault.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does inland altitude affect blowers in Tanzania?

At about 1,100 m and 28 °C, air density is roughly 85% of standard, so a 350 mm WC duty needs about 410 mm WC at standard air, compared with about 365 mm WC on the coast.

Can you supply blowers for gold mine ventilation?

We cover auxiliary extraction in non-gassy workings within our pressure range. We do not build primary main fans for large mines.

How should remote sites handle spares?

Use standard components, keep critical spares on site, and follow a simple routine of monthly vibration and current readings.

Do coastal sites need special coatings?

Usually, since salt and humidity corrode standard finishes, so specify durable coatings, protected fasteners, and sealed motors.

Can your blowers handle coffee or tea drying?

Yes, sized as an industrial drying duty from the moisture to remove and the operating temperature.
